ActiveState's newest release of its Komodo IDE for dynamic languages like Perl and Python has eliminated support for Visual Studio because of a conflict in release schedules and due to a lack of consumer interest. ActiveState also plans to drop its engineering support for the Visual Perl, Visual Python, and Visual XSLT plug-ins in Visual Studio 2002 and 2003. Additionally, the firm says it will not upgrade VS 2005. The source code for these abandoned projects has been released as open-source code. This will allow the community that still uses the projects to continue some level of support, if not continue development. The plug-ins incorporate source code from Visual Studio, however, so ActiveState will not release this code. The major reason for ending support was attributed to the fact that customers of Komodo did not show enough interest to make the effort worthwhile, according to David Asher, chief technology officer for ActiveState. There was a significant amount of work to be done to ensure compatibility with the new version of Visual Studio, but customers moving to Visual Studio .NET were doing so with the intent to use .NET everywhere. Komodo 3.5 has added support for the Ruby language and for Ruby on Rails, an increasingly popular application framework that is an alternative to J2EE. Komodo also offers support for the Multilingual Input Method Editor (MIME), which supports foreign-language characters, and for Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.3.
