Some firms have turned to data warehousing to address their information security problem. Companies must collect customer information in order to serve them better, but they must also protect this information from unauthorized use. By hosting information at secure locations offsite and using redundant and encrypted facilities, data owners receive a measure of safety. A totally secure system is a system that is completely closed, however, and this would be useless as a company resource. This means that a tradeoff will always be made between security and access. Most firms want relatively open access because they want to make it easy for customers to do business with them. Customers have become increasingly concerned about the security of their private information, however. This creates an opportunity for businesses to meet the data protection needs of clients. Experts have identified the places where customer data should be protected. These include databases, applications, access control, password protection, and log on. Technology can help to address many of these issues, and businesses have responded to customers' concerns by moving to increase the protections surrounding their information. Businesses and the government must cooperate to create reasonable guidelines for data security and then follow them.
