Mobile wireless networks in health care organizations require significant thought in terms of security, including strong encryption, virtual private networks, and management applications that allow for monitoring for network vulnerabilities. Many provider organizations are reviewing their wireless security arrangements in regard to evolving clinical technologies. They are examining how their networks are used, the devices accessing the system, existing hardwired strategies, and various available security technologies. Most wireless security tools have been relatively primitive in nature, but standards such as Wi-Fi Protected Access encryption and 802.11i protocols now exist, making wireless security much stronger. These protocols and standards are frequently bundled into management applications. They offer health organizations a central, consolidated system for maintaining a wireless network. Because no single security technology is appropriate for every health care provider, organizations should look for help from information technology consultants knowledgeable about security. Health care organizations are advised to seek security help from firms that have health care experience, as well, so they are sure to be in compliance with regulations and obtain everything they can from their wireless systems.
