Users of Microsoft's PowerPoint may have overlooked a useful way to fill and animate shapes in their graphics. Background fills offer an easy way to construct seemingly complicated animations. The process requires an excellent photograph, which is resized to match the computer screen's display size and saved in JPEG format. Users may then open PowerPoint, version 2002 or higher, and either begin with a blank slide or insert a new slide into an existing presentation. They then may select the 'format background' option and then choose 'fill effects' from the dropdown menu. After selecting the modified photo, they can use the autoshape option from the Drawing toolbar to cover an interesting portion of the background image. The shape can then be double-clicked to bring up the Format AutoShape dialogue box from which users may select a color. The shape can be duplicated until the desired number is reached by repeating these steps. The shapes can then be animated by selecting them and choosing a simple Entrance effect from the Custom Animation pane. Additional animations and shapes can be included to enhance the output. Using background fill animations gives users an interesting and effective way to focus viewers' attention on complicated images or to emphasize portions of large images in a dramatic way.
