Intel and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) Incorporated have both released dual-core desktop processors, and consumers are starting to upgrade to take advantage of the greater hypertasking efficiencies offered by these products. The transition to dual-core chips has not been completely smooth for Intel, which faced criticism concerning the limitations imposed by the processors' architecture. AMD has had an easier time, and its X2 series of dual core CPUs impressed industry experts by showing improvements in real-world speed. Other significant news from Intel in 2006 is the firm's migration to a 65-nanometer CPU fabrication process. The 65-nonometer refers to the width of the smallest circuit wires on the semiconductor. Taking this approach, Intel will provide greater financial efficiency and allow more transistors to be placed on a single chip. This will give a stronger basis for innovation on dual-core and multicore platforms. Also in 2006, Intel plans to introduce an important processor using Intel Next-Generation Microarchitecture. This processor promises increased power efficiency, lower temperatures, and more processing power through CPU cores that are more tightly integrated. This architecture is based on the next-generation mobile processor known as Merom, which is being developing with both mobile and dual-core and multicore features. AMD is introducing several new processors in its Athlon 64 and Sempron product lines.
