The Zimbra Collaboration Suite from Zimbra Inc. provides a new twist on the concept of offering contextual links to corporate data. While the product is still in beta mode, it is expected to be released by the end of January 2006. The suite offers e-mail, calendar, and scheduling information via a rich browser interface. The so-called contextualizing of data in e-mail messages is what separates Zimbra Collaboration Suite from many competing e-mail, calendar, and scheduling servers. The suite is available through open-source and commercial licenses. The feature that distinguishes Zimbra from its competitors is the rich Web-based client. The client is built using Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX), and it can identify and present message content plus additional contextual information. Zimbra plans to extend this capability to include information in other systems, such as customer relationship management (CRM) systems so that users can view relevant information without having to go into another system. Developers can integrate with third-party applications via the Zimbra AJAX Toolkit and SOAP API. The company has also provided some components, including a 'hover' capability as applets, which are called Zimlets. Users just have to move the cursor over a link to obtain information in Zimbra. For administrators, the Web-based management console allows for easy addition and management of users and groups, along with control of users' access to features of the suite.
