Multi-function printers, those that can copy, scan, print in color, and fax can save money for a company. In the recent past, the cost of color copying has decreased while the quality has increased. Five multi-function printers were tested. They were manufactured by Brother, HP, Lexmark, Oki Data and Toshiba. These systems were designed to serve many people, and are not meant for the desktop. Tests were conducted with 30 page documents, one with straight text and the other a mix of text and graphics. Color print quality was evaluated as well as scanning accuracy. Color quality varied considerably among the tested products. The favorite was the Lexmark X762e, which was fast and printed exceptionally. It has to be assembled, which was easy, but time consuming. Another good choice is the more economical Brother MFC-9420CN. It is a good value with just the common features. It produces good color but might be too slow for large workgroups. The HP Color LaserJet 4730x MFP was very easy to set up. It has a lot of features and prints fasts, but the color quality can only be considered average. When a document is printed from a PC it can be saved to the copier's electronic mailbox. This makes it easy to print forms that are in frequent use.
