The increasing use for information stored in databases is driving up the size of databases, making IT management more difficult. It is assumed that the amount of data stored is doubling every 12-18 months. Now megaterabyte databases are not uncommon. Wal-Mart, a big proponent of sales analysis, now allows management to access its databases every hour. EBay Inc. allows auction searches to determine what influences customer behavior. Being able to handle frequent and complex searches requires larger databases. Besides the newer uses for sales data, databases are increasing in size to accommodate new data coming in from new sources, like radio frequency identification tags on incoming products or TiVos and iPods. Users are also demanding historical and real-time data. We know how many 2.4-ounce tubes of toothpaste sold yesterday, and what was sold with them,' says Dan Phillips of Wal-Mart. Companies are spending a lot of money to increase the amount of sales analysis their databases can perform. This is justified by the end result in knowledge obtained from the data queries performed. Winter Corporation surveyed many companies in 2005 and Yahoo Search Marketing database was the largest at 100.4 terabytes.
