Members of the Telephone Collectors International (TCI), known as switchers, have been able to interconnect their old telephony equipment via VoIP. Beginning with a conversation on the TCI mailing list, fellow switchers have brought forth the Collectors Network (CNET), a working VoIP system. CNET links 17 TCI members, including 14 in North America, two in the Netherlands, and one in the United Kingdom, by using the old collectible gear, including electromechanical switches built in the 1930s that weigh some 700 pounds and have heights of up to 8 feet. Other network equipment includes Asterisk PBXs; cord and cordless switchboards; key telephone units; and step-by-step, crossbar and panel switches. Any problems with quality do not seem to point to the vintage equipment, but to the Internet and possible congestion issues. Users can connect to CNET in two ways. One uses an onsite Asterisk PBX on the originating end and the other alternative uses an analog telephone adapter (ATA) at the originating end. The ATA acts as the dialing intermediary between the Asterisk PBX and the originating end. Those who want to connect to CNET do not need to be telecom professionals or come from families who have a telecom heritage. All that is required is a high-speed broadband Internet connection, some adapters and converters.
