Because blog search engines rank keyword and phrase search according to the newness of the post, users can get too many results when they use blog search engines to find products. This could be detrimental to the use of tags, but Technorati's namesake search engine is trying to improve the situation with a tagging feature that allows bloggers to show what their posts are about. With Technorati tags, a blogger creates a set of metatags for each blog post. Then, when someone looks for a blog post about a specific item, he or she can visit Technorati and search on the tag for the product instead of the keyword. This allows readers to get much closer to what they are looking for than a simple word search, but this method still has some flaws. Tags should be carefully thought out before being posted and set up in a blogging service, so the average blogger might not leverage the advantages of tagging to assist readers in finding individual posts because of the extra effort required to create the tags. The system could also be abused by those who assign non-helpful tags just because the tag can carry a lot of traffic. Technorati, which has created a new Blog Finder feature that is still in beta, allows blog creators to assign subject tags for the whole blog, not just one post at a time. There are many ways other than blogs that user-generated tags could help people find content online, including in classified ads and to provide quick access to photos and blog entries on important news events.
