The dashboard, which is a graphical user interface (GUI) that organizes and shows information in an easily understood format, also may gather information from more than one source, including sensor and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, and integrate the information in a display of combined key performance indicators. A spokeswoman for Camstar notes that customers want a display that can be quickly scanned to determine whether all is as it should be or if there is a problem that needed to be dealt with. The dashboard uses color, charts, and pictures to allow users to swiftly analyze conditions. To ensure that it will be useful, the dashboard is a blending of graphics specified for and by each specific user and can include trending visuals such as static gauges, thermometers, or storage tanks. The user decides on the images used based on their relevancy for the specific needed, and tasks required to determine what is displayed are completed with straightforward configuration tools and without programming. The dashboard should also provide automatic alerting, which is one of its main benefits. Most dashboards are Web- and browser-based and are dual purpose in nature to serve intranet information for operational staff and to also be an Internet-accessible resource for customers and suppliers external to the company.
