Title: Qualcomm, Nokia come to patent blows

Qualcomm Incorporated has charged Nokia Corporation with patent infringement. Qualcomm took action shortly after Nokia joined with five other wireless companies that accused Qualcomm with behaving in an anti-competitive way. Qualcomm has denied the allegations, which stem from an anti-trust law violation complaint filed by Broadcom Corporation, a maker of computer chips. The wireless firms, including Nokia, joined in the anti-competition suit, claiming that Qualcomm promised to license its WCDMA patents fairly, but has reneged on its promises. Qualcomm's suit against Nokia involves patent infringements of 12 of the company's patents. Qualcomm says its action is not a retaliation against Nokia for joining the Broadcom suit. Nokia believes the actions taken by Qualcomm illustrate its disregard for its obligations and promises to offer licensing in a fair, reasonable, and nondiscriminatory way. While the litigation is expected to go on for years before it is settled, its resolution could mean significant money for the companies involved. If the courts find Qualcomm at fault, it would have to reduce its licensing rates, which would significantly lower its revenues. If Qualcomm wins the legal action, it would be likely to obtain a better licensing position in the market. This would probably reduce revenues for Nokia and the other firms accusing it of wrongdoing.
