In 2004, the Daily Breeze newspaper in Torrance, California, completed an integration of Adobe Systems InDesign and InCopy products with the NewsSpeed software from Digital Technology International. The paper had previously worked in a QuarkXPress environment, but grew increasingly unhappy with Quark's lack of response to its needs. InDesign was appealing to staff designers who were already familiar with other Adobe products like Photoshop or Illustrator, and when DTI integrated with Adobe to provide pagination and editorial capabilities, the newspaper made the switch. The Daily Breeze is one of the first newspapers to move its entire newsroom to Apple's Macintosh environment with DTI. All writers and editors work directly in InCopy; Microsoft Word documents coming in from reporters in the field are converted to InCopy by the DTI system. It took the newspaper nearly a year to stabilize all the applications, but the integration of DTI and the Adobe products has made its operations easier and more efficient. Editorial matters, pagination, archiving, Web posting, and late additions have all become easier to handle since the integration. The issue of deadline flexibility for the paper's 48 pages each night has become increasingly important since the Breeze moved its printing function to Southwest Offset Printing. Without the new editorial and pagination software, the Breeze would not have been able to consider printing off site, and it would not have obtained the enhanced quality and speed in production it now enjoys.
