Title: Hardware versus Software Approaches to Encrypting Data for Security

Management of data encryption keys, users, and security policies is more complicated when using a software-based encryption solution as opposed to a centralized hardware approach. Complexity increases with the deployment of software-based cryptography solutions across a large number of database and application servers. In an enterprise environment, this issue is significantly magnified due to the fact that architectures typically are made up of hundreds of applications and a large number of databases. Software-based encryption solutions usually do not require as large as of an initial investment compared with hardware-based solutions, but the cost of deployment and administration often makes them have long-term costs that can be prohibitive. For the best results, any deployment of an encryption solution must be customized to a company's particular IT infrastructure and undertaken as part of an overall data privacy and security framework. For some organizations, the best solution may be encrypting data at the Web server layer, although data encryption at the database layer may be the most prudent given the associated application infrastructure. Managers must also ensure that the implementation will comply with all applicable security regulations and privacy legislation that governs the company's particular industry.
