DAT-LAB from Deffinity Solutions (now IDBS), IntelliChem iELN from Symyx, and eNovator from KineMatik are highlighted in a discussion of likelihood that electronic laboratory notebooks (ELNs) will soon be more widely used. One company's poll indicates that over 90% of respondents had not installed an ELN system, but that 36% were planning such a purchase over the next six months. Over 60% of respondents already had ELN projects under way. Among those urging use of ELNs are pharmaceutical company lawyers, who now support their use because the U.S. Patent Office (USPTO) and drug regulators support electronic formats. Others responsible for increased use are software providers who have always contended that automation would improve the reliability of notebook witnessing. Over the past 12 months, consultants and market research companies have also produced many strategy papers that describe the economic advantages of ELNs. Software companies have been working apace to refine, extend, and upgrade their software applications. The new IntelliChem 5.0 software has various new tools for parallel execution of experiments and enterprise workflow, in addition to better security and performance. For workflow, for instance, IntelliChem iELN allows administrators to link workflow to the use of a document. Among other products highlighted are products from Infotrieve and IDBS (the provider of E-WorkBook ELN), and the eNovator (a Web-based ELN that is integrated with a project and portfolio management system).
