Sun Microsystems Mobile 3D Graphics for the J2ME platform API (M3G) bridges platform-specific graphics capabilities with a common programming interface for Java-enabled small devices.' For those who are versed in the MIDP 2.0 API, M3G is an excellent way to enhance Java 2 Mobile Edition (J2ME) projects. The most challenging learning aspect of M3G is finding out where to begin if the user has no experience with 3D graphics programming. If that is the case, the user should create a simple program to write and search the application programming interface (API) for only those parts needed as a specific part of the program is written. At the conclusion of the effort, the user will understand the API sufficiently well to study it closely. Those experienced with M3G will learn how to use it fast because it has design concepts taken from OpenGL. Two modes of operation are supported: retained and immediate. Retained permits loading and displaying of pre-build 3D environments. Immediate permits definition of 3D environments through direct instantiation and assembly of objects in a program. For retained mode, M3G defines a scene graph file format that can be used by modeling tools or file format converters. Learning and use of M3G can be facilitated by working from the bottom up (first creating objects, then adding them, then rendering the scene, and then providing a way for the user to interact with the scene). A sample development scenario is provided in which a simple object (cube) is created.
