Zimbra's Zimbra Collaboration Suite Network Edition, AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript And XML), and Google's Google Maps are highlighted in a discussion of Zimbra's optimism that the world is ready for a feature-rich e-mail service that costs less than Microsoft Exchange Server or Lotus Domino. The Zimbra Collaboration Server Network Edition offers powerful multi-tenancy abilities to allow resellers and others to host multiple clients on pooled servers in safety and security, says Scott Dietzen, president and CTO of Zimbra. Danny Pickford, VP of technology for Speakeasy, a provider of managed broadband mail/VoIP and other services for business and residential use, is considering the service. One advantage, says Pickford, is its fully cross-platform design, which widens the marketplace and offers integration with other products, including Microsoft Exchange. Zimbra also uses AJAX, a programming technique for construction for lightweight, rich interactive applications. Zimbra Collaboration Server Network Edition is savvy and full of features, particularly for its management from the Web application without any requirement for a large, monolithic desktop. Zimbra's open source tools and frameworks are another advantage, and Zimbra's staff understand the technology. Zimbra also provides free and commercial versions, with the commercial release adding such features as cross-mailbox search, discovery and indexing of attachments, support, and fixes.
