Title: Radio goes HD

High-definition radio (HDR) is free as analog, except for the cost of the receiver, with no subscription fees and the usual number of ads. Local broadcasters can provide up three program feeds with levels of quality that vary based on the way bandwidth is divided up. Sound can be similar to a good MP3 or a good phone call. The first channel generally duplicates the conventional analog station, but others can differ considerably. Listeners can frequently hear the advantages of digital instantly. The radio heard first is analog and then switches to digital a few seconds later. Stations that have poor quality will provide much better quality sound without the noise, and range between loud and soft tones expands. The first table model HD radio available is Boston Acoustics Recepter Radio HD, which is on the glitzy side. Standard analog and HD stations can be heard, and sound is good when the bass is reduced. The FCC still does not permit AM stations to broadcast HD signals after dark. Some car tuners and a Yamaha component receiver are now available. Radiosophy will soon make available a less expensive table model, and more choices should be available for Christmas 2006 that cost even less.
