The U3-technology-based Memorex Travel-Drive is a petite USB drive with new technology that lets it store and, when plugged into a PC, securely run applications, without leaving data on the host computer. The U3-compliant applications, personal settings, and data all reside on the portable drive, allowing users to turn any Windows 2000 or XP machine into a personal workstation without threatening privacy. Using USB drives for portable applications is not new, but this functionality has always been based on proprietary technology. U3, which was put together by SanDisk and M-Systems, offers licenses to any developer that wishes to distribute applications on a U3-compliant drive. Companies that have released or announced U3 versions of their software include ArcSoft, America Online, McAfee, Cerulean Studios, Nullsoft, and Skype. Along with SanDisk and M-Systems, other vendors that have announced U3 drives include Verbatim, Memorex, and Kingston Technology. As to be expected, the drive's capacity will limit its ability to hold data and applications. The majority of the first U3 devices that have been released are 512MB or 1GB offerings. Kate Purmal, CEO of U3, says the technology was designed for potential usage on other portable storage devices such as SD and CompactFlash cards. The company is currently negotiating licenses with over 30 software and hardware vendors.
