Microsoft Office will be made open to all, says Alan Yates, general manager of Microsoft Information Worker Strategy. When the Microsoft Office Open XML Format technology is submitted as a formal standard to Ecma International, Ecma International will develop the documentation and make it available to the industry. When the standard is approved by Ecma, it will be submitted to the International Organization for Standardization, which, along with Ecma, is located in Geneva, Switzerland. Microsoft will submit file formats to Ecma and the ISO, but a spokesman for Sun Microsystems says Microsoft may have a long way to go to meet the minimum standards that governments, open source communities, and the wider industry have adopted in Microsoft's absence. But Sun is pleased to see Microsoft's openness to the deployment of a real standard. Microsoft has been under increasing pressure from such users as the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the European Commission, which has been urging vendors to adopt open source for Office documents and to make sure their products are interoperable. IBM and Sun have already been increasing pressure on Microsoft by considering the formation of a foundation to increase the adoption of the OpenDocument format. Alan Yates of Microsoft states that Microsoft is making a promise not to sue anyone for use of the formats and that the promise is for the long term and will attract many developers.
