ZyXEL Communications' ZyWall P1 is the first hardware-based personal security appliance that provides centrally managed enterprise-class protection for remote users. While more expensive than a personal firewall, the ZyWall P1 can work with just about any operating system or device. The appliance offers enhanced security over software-based firewalls in that it cannot be disabled by worms. The ZyWall P1 offers platform independence and plug-and-play capability. In tests it was easily hooked up to a Linux desktop, a Windows XP laptop, a Mac G5 Powerbook, and then configured through a browser-based GUI. The VPN client is also fairly easy to set up, although the option for adding VPN rules is less than intuitive. The ZyWall P1 can be powered with the included USB-to-mini-USB cable, but it comes without support for wireless connections. The appliance's biggest downside is that it supports a single onboard configuration, although it is easy to backup and restore configuration files from a storage device. A wide range of protocols are supported for centralized management, allowing security administrators the ability to enforce firewall policies through HTTP, HTTPS, Telnet, FTP, SSH, DNS, and SNMP. The appliance also offers strong logging capabilities, with over twelve different logging and alert parameters that can be turned on and off via check boxes.
