Despite sound research in the usage of games to enrich education, technological advances, and new learning theories that support the important role of cognitive activities in the learning process, the integration of video games in schools continues to be challenging. One problem is the definition of the word 'game,' since there are as many games available as there are player tastes. Also, when a game becomes mandatory as a school activity, it can quickly lose its appeal and merely become another chore. Some analysts contend that games may actually be a better fit as an after-school skill-enhancement activity and will give better results when they are not bound by constraints of the school model. Games used in education must be of top quality in order to be effective. They also must be built into a quality curriculum. Another important point to consider about using games in schools is that most educators do not play video games. Students must be supervised by a teacher who truly understands learning and games, and one who plays an active role. Students also need to be instructed on how to reflect on what they are doing. A good teacher will ask students to stop playing from time to time, and probe their understanding and cognitive processes as they perform gaming tasks.
