A look at the Beta 1 version of the new Microsoft Office product (codenamed Office '12') shows significant changes to the Office user interface and much more support for customization. Further, Microsoft has shed its proprietary image with its plans to submit technical specifications for all Office '12' file formats to the European Computer Manufacturers Association (ECMA) standards body, which will lead to an eventual standardization by the ISO. Office '12' now offers point-and-click document formatting, with Excel, Word, and PowerPoint providing a wide variety of graph and chart styles, and document style sheets that let users easily reformat documents and restyle graphics. Changes can also be previewed before committing. Users clicking Save As in any Office '12' application will be able to select the new Office XPS format. This is a combination of ZIP and XML technologies that allows for the ability to save multiple versions of the same document in a single document file, and also includes metadata that can be used by developers. Office '12' users will also be able to save Office documents as PDF files. The least changed application in Office '12' is Outlook, which now boasts an included to-do task list and calendar in a right-hand pane. However, Outlook also now offers direct support of RSS feeds, so users will find the feeds they subscribe to waiting in their Inbox.
