Title: Database Revival

The database market may be seen to be consolidating, but a number of new products are offering lower prices as well as open-source. However, business-technology managers need to keep in mind that database conversion is an expensive proposition and less expensive offerings may not provide the scalability and features required when the database grows. Sleepy-cat Software's Berkeley DB, Ants Software's ANTs Data Server in-memory database, and the Firebird Foundation's Firebird (an open-source version of Interbase from Borland Software) are some of the new players in the database market. MySQL is used heavily at such heavyweight companies as Google and Sabre Systems. This is causing companies to take a second look at these alternatives, which are now being used for real-world tasks. The latest version of MySQL offers top-notch features including remote start or stop, as well as remote editing of configuration files. The company also has released a toolkit that lets users migrate data from Microsoft or Oracle databases to MySQL. Many database users are finding they may not need the extra features of high-end database systems and that open-source databases provide all the functionality they need. Some industry analysts contend that this will be the reason that open-source databases will gain more and more presence in midsize and upper-tier business applications in the next several years.
