Scripting languages that are easier, quicker to write, but less powerful than Java or Microsoft's .Net, are proliferating all over the Internet. Developers can now build applications for more specific purposes and under shorter deadlines than what is allowable under Java's design. Javascript, as part of the Ajax software stack that powers Web sites including Yahoo's Flickr and Google Maps, is enjoying a resurgence in popularity and is setting standards in the look-and-feel of Web sites, and their response to users' actions. The eleven-year-old PHP scripting language is also making a return appearance in its use of creating a new class of situational software that developers can write and deploy quickly, utilize for a short period of time, and then discard. The embracing of PHP and Ajax can be seen as an answer to the current software industry philosophy that places more value on quick and frequent releases over longer-tested new versions. Nowadays, user feedback is often received overnight via blogs and e-mail, resulting in the rewriting of applications the next day. Ajax is especially popular because it is considered easy to learn, can be used to create graphically rich applications without the need to license Flash, and results in applications that look like desktop software.
