It is possible for consumers to use VOIP at home in a do-it-yourself fashion, though there can be pitfalls. With broadband Internet access and installation of Digium's Asterisk Developer Lite on a home PC as well as an FXO card and an FXS card, the set-up constitutes a home PBX. This gives users the capabilities of full logging caller ID; time, date, and duration of all inbound and outbound calls; the recording of all inbound calls; and the rejection of calls from specific numbers. Calls from different callers can be handled differently such as sending them to separate mailboxes, leaving different greetings for certain numbers, and requiring unknown numbers to leave messages without ringing the inside line. Users can also configure services such as find-me and follow-me. Also required is a VOIP termination service, which gives users the ability to make outgoing calls. It is easy to find listings of Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and Inter-Asterisk exchange (IAX) signaling VOIP service providers by searching on the Internet. The Asterisk PBX supports both SIP and IAX, which are the two most commonly used VOIP protocols for session control. IAX and SIP are both open protocols, but SIP has more support in the industry and is documented by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) in RFC standard documents. Usage of IAX is derived from Asterisk and is popular as a de facto standard of sorts.
