JVC's GR-DV3000 digital video camera is just one product in the emerging segment for hybrid still/video digital image-capture devices that could bring revenues by meeting two consumer imaging needs in one device. The GR-DV3000 can capture megapixel stills and electronically stabilized video through the speedy 10x optical zoom lens. The camera captures four modes of JPEG-compatible still images and two modes of MPEG-4-compatible video to the Secure Digital (SD) memory card, Mini DV cassette, or both. A Sony CCD (charge-coupled device) image sensor (the ICX286) combined with a Sony CCD CDX3602 timing controller provides low-level analog signals for sensor readout (color and intensity values for each pixel). The stream is fed to a Renesas HD49334 analog image processor, which controls noise through correlated double sampling of each pixel. Signal levels are boosted in a programmable gain amplifier, and the preprocessed signal is converted into a 10-bit data stream with its internal A/D converter. The camera then splits digitized imager output into separate streams for feeding of independent signal-processing engines for video and stills downstream. In general, the GR-DV3000 is part of the more camcorder-centered design side of the motion/still combination competition and supports stills with dedicated circuitry and more available resolution.
