In a 1998 paper, investigators at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) demonstrated that Raman spectroscopy can differentiate between benign and malignant lesions in breast cancer. Such a diagnostic technique could reduce the number of biopsies needed. The researchers have further developed the technique and have demonstrated that their spectroscopic method could characterize the chemical/morphological composition of a wide range of breast tissue specimens and pathologies. The advances could result in a less invasive diagnosis of breast cancer. Raman's advantage over other spectroscopic method is its greater number of Raman active molecules in breast tissue and its comparatively few endogenous fluorophores. Michael S. Feld, principal investigator, states that Raman building blocks are crucial to the benefits, and researchers have been working since 2002 to develop a spectroscopic model of breast tissue that can show whether tissue samples include benign or malignant lesions, based on combinations of Raman building blocks in the samples. Validation of the model with data from various specimens obtained during breast cancer diagnosis and surgery showed that the model can diagnose multiple types of benign and malignant lesions.
