Computer Associates International (CA), which has suffered relatively flat revenue for the past several years, is hoping to change that trend with the introduction of its Enterprise IT Management initiative. Consisting of three new and 26 enhanced management and security offerings based on CA's common services platform, it is the largest product introduction in the history of the company. The effort encompasses approximately 85 products and mandates that any new or acquired CA products will use the common services platform where appropriate. The company is also in the midst of a rebranding strategy that includes a name change to CA, as well as the investment of $650 million in engineering and $2 billion in acquisitions. The company plans to unify, simplify, and secure enterprise IT management in its bid to dominate the security and enterprise management software sector. The common services integration platform features a consistent user interface, shared policies, a workflow engine, and a management database (MDB). The challenge for CA is to demonstrate that the integration platform strategy is significantly different, even though it is reminiscent of the company's enterprise management frameworks that did not meet user expectations. In this case, the products are modular, based on service-oriented architecture (SOA) and are deployed on the services they need. Another difference is that the level of data integration provided by the platform is through the MDB and not just by way of APIs.
