Sun Microsystems has announced its UltraSPARC T1 processor, which will begin appearing in systems by the end of 2005. This is the latest step in the company's efforts to distance itself from its reputation as being focused only on the SPARC-Solaris platform for high-end users, and instead turning itself into a systems vendor that can fill the needs of all sectors of the market. The chip represents the largest advance so far in the company's Throughput Computing strategy. The UltraSPARC T1 uses only 70 watts of power, addressing the evolving issues of heat generation and energy consumption. It provides eight cores per chip running up to four instruction threads each. The company is aiming the processor at the Web tier, which is currently dominated by Linux-based x86 systems, and where the need for massive amounts of parallelism is increasing as more firms move their businesses onto the Web. In 2006 Sun is expected to launch its UltraSPARC IIIi+ processor and a series of RISC servers that it has jointly developed with Fujitsu. Analysts contend that the UltraSPARC T1 is a bold move for Sun Microsystems, which for so long has been a leader in the Unix industry. Now it is important for the firm to demonstrate that it is in a proactive mode rather than a reactive one.
