Nowadays there are a number of methods available for companies to implement encryption for data security. Real-time hardware-based encryption uses a hard drive controller with a USB key. Between the hard drive and the computer is an attached printed circuit board. After data that is to be saved is sent to the controller card, it is encrypted and then written to the hard drive. Software-based encryption can involve hard drives or virtual drives. Encryption of individual files can be accomplished by utilizing Microsoft's encrypting file system (EFS) feature available in Windows 2000 or XP. Commercial programs for Linux and Macintosh are also available. However, securely encrypted data is not always invincible. If a hard drive fails whether encrypted or not, the good areas of the drive can hopefully still be read. For a drive that is encrypted, a data recovery expert works with the business to get the key or password for decryption of the drive. However, it is imperative for firms to keep their data encryption keys safe, possibly in storage at a different location. If the decryption key is lost or cannot be produced, the encrypted data may become completely unusable. In cases where the hard drive works fine but data becomes corrupted, it is best to employ a regular backup scheme.
