Different companies have different takes on whether to provide mobile data access to their employees. Full, secure and seamless broadband access to applications while on the road is still not easy to attain. Some firms choose to wait until the technology matures, but others who require a highly mobile workforce feel the pressure to deliver broadband wireless mobility. Such delivery can cause headaches for IT departments due to a wide variety of potential business, technology, and support problems. However, more widespread deployment of Wi-Fi hotspots, carrier-based 3G networks, and the emerging WiMAX technology make some feel that there are reasons to be optimistic. It is easy for companies to both overestimate and underestimate the business value of mobile information access. Companies that want to implement wireless technology may overestimate the benefits in productivity, yet not take support costs into consideration. On the other hand, focusing too much on monthly charges may cause some business analysts to overlook the true benefits of real-time access to mission critical data. Companies should note that in many cases a wired network connection will be sufficient for most users since even those who work remotely are many times more nomadic than truly mobile. Lower-cost Wi-Fi services can often meet nomadic needs.
