Title: Have briefcase, will travel

Lenovo's ThinkPad X41 tablet PC, logear's Laser Travel Mouse, Brother Industries' Mprint micro printer, and PhatWare's Phat Pad notetaking software are four portable technologies that can be a real help to business travelers. The Thinkpad X41 is the lightest convertible tablet currently available, and switches quickly and easily from notebook to tablet mode. It also offers a bi-directional fingerprint reader. The small size of the machine is a plus but tradeoffs include a small 12.1-inch display and the need for an external optical drive. The Laser Travel Mouse demonstrates that optical mice are a thing of the past. Laser mice can be used on polished surfaces that optical mice cannot handle, and also offer more accurate and powerful tracking. The logear product offers superior design: its tiny size does not make it more difficult to use. The product includes a retractable cable, scroll wheel, a hard carrying case and a PS/2 adapter. The Mprint thermal micro printer is not for users who need to print out 8.5-inch-by-11-inch documents. Its small size makes it geared toward small printed output such as bill printing for field-based service technicians; prescription printing for doctors; and repair statements and parts labels. The Mprint's measurements are 3.9 inches by 6.3 inches by 0.7 inches, which makes it a little big to fit into a shirt pocket, but allows for it fitting nicely in a brief case. The PhatPad software is compatible with Pocket PCs but also can be used with tablet and desktop computers. The interface mimics a piece of paper that users write on with a digital pen. The software offers storage for up to 16,000 handwritten pages per file. Notes and drawings can be exported in JPEG and bitmap formats.
