One major concern businesses face today is being able to communicate efficiently without worrying about fragmented networks and proprietary technology. The networking, mobile-platform, and telecommunications industries have begun to take steps to solve this problem. Research in Motion has extended its wireless e-mail platform so it can be used with the Palm Treo 650 smart phone, which is set for an early 2006 release. This translates into more device choices for mobile workers. The Treo and other upcoming devices that use the Palm operating system will offer connection to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, which currently offers support for Lotus Notes and Microsoft Exchange. In another development, Cisco Systems is set to release its IP Interoperability and Collaboration System that will allow standards-based and proprietary walkie-talkie radios to communicate with each other, as well as with other IP-based wireless and wired devices, and analog telephones. While these are welcome announcements, the big issue is still that users should not have to be concerned with what device they're using, what network they are on, the location of the other person, and the need to install additional technology to communicate effectively. Many telecommunications service providers are looking to solve this problem with IP multimedia subsystem technology (IMS). IMS is designed to allow traffic to transparently move from one network to another, whether voice, video, data, or multimedia messages. SBC Communications and Cingular Wireless both plan to deploy IMS products from Lucent Technologies in the near future
