Title: OFFICE OPTIONS OPEN UP

Tests conducted on alternatives to Microsoft Office, including OpenOffice.org, show good results in the ability to open and create Microsoft Office documents. However, some compatibility issues are apparent. A common source of incorrect document rendering is in missing fonts, which can cause changes in pagination and paragraph lengths, and the shifting of floating elements out of alignment. Users can ensure that the documents they create are rendered correctly by utilizing Adobe's PDF as an output format. Sun Microsystem's StarOffice 8 and OpenOffice.org 2.0, both have an export-to-PDF feature. These two products, along with other Microsoft Office alternatives, are standardizing on the Organization for the Advancement of Structure Information Standards' (OASIS) OpenDocument format. This is based on the XML file format implementation found in the original OpenOffice.org. Microsoft contends that it will not offer support for the OpenDocument format because the standard does not offer sufficient encapsulation of the functionality of its Office products. However, Microsoft, in its role as an OASIS member, opted out of participating in the drafting of the OpenDocument standard. Companies considering an office suite must seriously think about training costs and possibly reduced productivity during the readjustment period. However, even new Microsoft Office products necessitate a period of adjustment.
