Title: X Marks the Sweet SAN Spot

Apple's Xsan 1.1 is a simple port of Advanced Digital Information Corporation's (ADIC) StorNext File System and does not include tools for data management. Lifecycle management is taken care of by ADIC's StorNext Storage Manager or other similar offerings. However, Xsan is a very good solution for the problem of accessing massive amounts of data at a reasonable price. Its powerful software also boasts an intuitive and attractive interface. The Xsan Admin tool manages monitoring, access control, and notification, with Apple's Fibre Channel Utility and RAID Admin tool handling processes at the lower level. The tool is reliant on Apple's Open Directory implementation of LDAP for delivering user and group information for Mac OS X clients. Therefore Xsan MDCs are able to consume Microsoft's Active Directory and other supported foreign directories. The task that SAN administrators will perform the most often will be the mounting and unmounting of volumes on Mac OS X clients. Administrators can also monitor the amount of time volumes have been mounted on each client. The strongpoint of Xsan is in its ease of management. On the downside, the Xsan Admin and StorNext client cannot communicate with each other. The product is not designed for use in heavy-traffic situations, but offers powerful and stable performance when administrators must move large amounts of data in a hurry.
