Eleven ultra-portable notebook computers, all weighing less than six pounds, are evaluated. Dell's Latitude D410 wins a Reviewer's Choice award for its nice three-pound, five-ounce weight, and good performance. The machine scores the fastest of the evaluated notebooks in benchmark tests, and is also reasonable in price. On the downside, battery life is not up to par, running just under two hours in testing. Fujitsu's LifeBook S7020 also wins a Reviewer's Choice award for its internal optical drive, good performance, and three USB ports. The notebook has many features despite its four-pound, seven-ounce weight, including an internal multiformat DVD writer, a gigabit Ethernet port, 512MB of RAM, an 80GB hard drive, and a fingerprint sensor. Its large 14.1-inch screen is another positive feature. On the downside, battery life is a mediocre 1 hour and 53 minutes. HP's Compaq nc4200 also wins a Reviewer's Choice award for its long battery life and multiple inputs. The machine has a 12.1-inch display and weight of just 3 pounds, 4 ounces. It also boasts both a touchpad and pointing stick for cursor movement. Each device has its own set of mouse buttons, so users can utilize whichever feels the most comfortable. On the downside, the nc4200 does not include an internal optical drive, although there is an external model available.
