MSC.Software's SimManager and UGS Teamcenter PLM are highlighted in a discussion of efficient CAE data management products with consistent reporting mechanisms. SimManager and UGS are unusual in the CAE market because they not only provide optimized products and improved quality, but also features for data retrieval and management. An analyst says the primary goal of such systems is efficient use of data to help companies achieve the goal of getting the right product to market at the right time, in the right quantity. With data manager, for instance, users can track results, associate them with the correct model, discover why a design was tested, what it was tested for, and what configuration was tested. CAE data management systems need to create the following abilities: connections between instances of MCAD models and the corresponding mesh models; ability to gain access to inputs such as materials, loads, and constraints for consistency and repeatability; a bill of analysis for engineers that maps other bills of materials (BOM) related to design, manufacturing, sourcing, and so on; and a consistent method for visualization and reporting of CAE results. No system is comprehensive as yet, but MSC.SimManager views CAE data management as separate from product life-cycle management (PLC), but feeds information into PDM and PLM. In contrast, UGS approach is to integrate it into PLM. For engineers who need to be able to know what will occur when a design is modified. Teamcenter also has tools for each level of data access and provides two ways to gain access to analysis and data.
