Multiple physical prototypes are a thing of the past in today's companies, replaced by dynamic virtual prototypes to save money and time. Virtual prototypes consist of a digital product definition with all variations taken into account and entered into a product data management (PDM) system. From concept, it should focus on styling, product design, engineering, management, sales, maintenance, and retirement. While no vendor has all of these elements, but many are moving in that direction with an RDV (repeatable digital validation). The prototypes need to be broken down into different configurations and assemblies by a number of different users. RDV systems allow engineers to automatically create JT files for visualization, collaboration, and interoperability of the designs. They can insert rules particular to the design and let other engineers on the project know about it, and the system can catch rule conflicts. It also allows engineers to create digital mock ups at a moment's notice and keep updated product configurations optimized. RDV also reduces cycle time by up to 60%.
