Palm's Treo 600 and 650 and Good's G100 data-only wireless PDA and GoodLink are products used by UnumProvident to provide a mobile sales force with efficient tools for checking e-mail and calendars when traveling or otherwise out of the office. Treo Wireless smartphones/personal digital assistants (PDAs) work with integrated wireless services and servers from Good, and cellphone services are provided by multiple service providers. Efficiency has improved, allowing sales representatives to spend more time with customers. They also can speed turnaround time and contract signing because answers to customer questions and concerns can be provided more quickly. UnumProvident compared RIM solutions and Good solutions, which have similar architectural approaches. Good's system had better remote management and choice of handhelds and was the only vendor to offer over-the-air provisioning of remote devices. The feature permits UnumProvident IT staff to set up and manage handhelds remotely via the wireless carrier. Over-the-air provisioning lowered total cost of ownership (TOC) because technical support requirements to physically handle the devices were reduced and shipping costs spent sending handhelds back to IT were eliminated. UnumProvident now runs two GoodLink servers installed behind the corporate firewall to allow the UnumProvident IT department to set wireless devices access policies, provide over-the-air provisioning abilities, and take care of integration to back-end applications such as UnumProvident's Exchange e-mail system.
