The results of the 'Software Development' 2005 Software Development Salary and Job Satisfaction Survey of almost 3,500 U.S. software engineers and technical managers are provided. Salaries again rose slightly in 2005, with respondents reporting an average 5% raise in 2005. A comparison of 2005 and 2004 base salaries indicate raises in the 3% range or lower. The average staff salary was $82,000 in 2005 and $80,000 in 2004. The average manager's salary in 2005 was $100,000 and $99,000 in 2004. The median bonus for staff was $1,000 and for managers was $4,000. Almost a third of managers with the title software architect are foreign-born, and foreign-born developers often have higher educational credentials, with 26% holding masters degrees as compared to 13% native born masters degree holders. Most foreign born respondents are from the United Kingdom, Canada, China, India, Taiwan, Russia, and the Philippines. Developers who use model-driven architecture and modeling tools are the best paid. The largest percentage of respondents develop client server applications. Salary categories broken out are application design, application development, application testing/quality assurance, Internet development, and project management. Response percentages are also provided for average salary overall by tools deemed most important, average salary by key technical skills, base salary trends between 1999-and 2005, average metropolitan area salaries, average staff salary by title, and average manager salary by title. Respondents also reported on the languages and technologies they use, their industries, tools used most, most important technical skills for staff and management, and languages and technologies used by IT teams between 2003 and 2005.
