The IBM IntelliStation A Pro, a performance system available with dual-core, dual-capable AMD Opteron processors allows simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing. The system, which is for compute-heavy, graphics-intensive applications environments (including CAD), has many admirable features. The system tested had 2GB RAM, but 4GB RAM is supported in the Microsoft Windows XP Professional environment. Maximum physical memory for the system is 16GB running under some Linux distributions. The compact, quiet, and attractive machine has been carefully designed with attention to detail and is also highly expandable with many options for configuring to the needs of each user. The tested system had a PCI-e NVIDIA Quadro FX 3400 graphics card with 256MB of 256-bit GDDR2 SDRAM memory installed. One benchmark was Cadalyst C2001 running AutoCAD 2006 and its default hardware acceleration driver, without supplemental Heidi drivers. The second benchmark was 3ds Max v.7 with Service Pack 1 installed. The base-level Windows driver for 3ds Max was set, and testers used NVidia's MAXtreme 7.00.03 accelerated driver. The proe-03 test was run from the SPECviewperf 8.0.1 benchmark. IBM IntelliStation A Pro had very good numbers throughout testing, and, with genuine multithreaded applications, performance advantages will probably be even better. The tested configuration of the IBM IntelliStation A Pro is not available on the IBM Web site, but would be available to a customer who deals with a representative in-person.
