Corel has launched Painter IX, offering even more options and features than previous versions, which is both a blessing and a curse. Built for commercial designers, fine artists and professional photographers, Painter IX includes tips from actual creative professionals that offer quicker learning and shortcuts. This latest Help function is also faster than in past versions. The new welcome screen is well organized, offering fast access to saved files, brush and color management, and useful tutorials. When coupled with Wacom's Intuos3 pen tablet and 6D Art Pen, the creative process resembles more of the natural elements in the real world. The performance, speed, and stability of Painter have also been greatly improved, as the system responds more closely in real-time to key commands and brush strokes. However, a delay is still there with large brushes. Other areas that have improved include the Artist's Oil Painting, offering more realistic digital artwork; Digital Watercolor, with more brushes available as well as an eraser; and the enhanced palettes, with the tracker palette automatically storing each brush stroke. While there is a learning curve to using all the features and customized options, these elements allow much better control over the art work. The drawback is the longer time it takes to become an aficionado of the software.
