The Port of Oakland is the first port in the U.S. to install full-size Radiation Portal Monitors built by SAIC that detect high levels of potassium in goods that come though it. In the past, goods like bananas, earthenware, kitty litter, and other products that contain thorium-based glazes have set off alarms meant for dirty bombs or other radioactive devices that are a threat to national security. The portals are set to detect gamma rays and high energy neurons. The monitors were deployed without delaying the fourth largest port's traffic flow, and the port officials are busy fine-tuning the detectors to catch all possible problems. The monitors are placed inside two large pillars that a truck drives through at five miles per hour. A screen inside the inspection booth provides the reading. If an alarm goes off, the truck is sent to another portal where it is rescreened. If it again fails, it is then inspected with a handheld device. Despite the port's processing of over 3,500 containers a day, no weapons or illegal materials have been found. All information that is learned from the Oakland installation will be used in the remaining U.S. ports and possibly airports. The largest ports will get the monitors first.
