A discussion is provided of the ascendancy of the hosted content management system (CMS), which is not suitable for confidential information, but is a good choice for public-facing content, particularly for companies with small IT staffs and smaller budgets. Tony Byrne, founder of DMS Watch, notes that Salesforce.com, the very successful customer relationship management (CRM) software company, has had a very important influence on the hosted model overall, due to its success and disruptive influence on the industry. Salesforce.com remained successful after the collapse of other application service providers, which indicated that the model is viable in other areas. A spokesman for CrownPeak says hosted CMS is most appropriate for larger enterprises, especially highly complex sites. An editor of the Gilbane Report, however, recommends hosting for small- and mid-sized businesses (SMBs). Among the reasons for choosing hosting are cost control and ease of use. Byrne says an important advantage of hosting is its ability to allow a company to focus on core business (content) rather than the tool or how to manage tradeoffs in the CMS itself. Among issues of concern with hosted applications are security, integration, and content ownership, but these can all be resolved satisfactorily, says Byrne. As for content migration, says Byrne, companies are now very expert in getting data to the customer, and most customers get regular backups . Contracts and methods also ensure trouble-free transfer of data from vendor to customer if the relationship ends or sours.
