The need for companies to bring structure and security to business-critical information has helped database and enterprise content management (ECM) software to fulfill the requirements in the IT market. New regulations, such as Sarbanes-Oxley and Basel II, have spurred demand for solutions to the large amounts of unstructured data (emails, photographs, instant messages, etc.) being created. Managing this knowledge has become a complex, important need. As digital data overtakes paper-based information, businesses must more vigilantly manage and secure its sensitive knowledge. As the computing devices get smaller and unwired, the variety of ways to access this unstructured data multiplies. It is important for organizations to harmonize this trend with the security needs of the business-critical information flow. Companies in this arena must ask themselves questions about the implications of mobile devices mixed with their desktop enterprise network. A variety of issues remain for the knowledge management professional. While there are no simple answers, serious discussions must be had to deal with the interaction of mobile content and knowledge assets.
