Siemens Communications, 3COM, and Interactive Intelligence's unified messaging (UM) systems are integrating more real-time communication capabilities, such as instant messaging (IM), presence management, and call-routing rules. Siemens Communications HiPath Xpressions 4.0 has high-availability components that can be distributed over multiple servers. It also provides good integration paths into LDAP-based directories and enterprise message stores. However, Interactive Intelligence's Communite' 2.3.1 beat it out with its tighter integration with Active Directory and efficient administrative tools. HiPath does have a strong voicemail-only capability and traditional UM performance at a lower price. While Communite' was easy to integrate, it does not provide active synchronization between the voicemail store and the Exchange 2003 server. Additionally, it is a much more expensive system. The 3Com IP Messaging module had the worst showing with its weak integration with Active Directory and Exchange. Its feature set did not do well when parted from the company's IP Telephony module and IP phones. These SIP-compliant UM systems will work on next-generation open source IP PBXs, making upgrades easier and more affordable.
