IBM Tivoli Composite Application Management (ITCAM) will monitor service-oriented architecture (SOA) service and application performance and will provide network operations staff with views into the condition of underlying infrastructure components, including middleware and application servers. The announcement of ITCAM follows Hewlett-Packard's (HP's) introduction in June 2005 of OpenView SOA Manager. An analyst points out that Web services and SOA management supports more than merely up-and-running alerts on separate SOA projects because customers want to be able to manage security, policies, and everything else across enterprise-level SOA. A Web application architect for a healthcare provider says SOA management software could possibly help him learn more about the workings of applications in production and also alert the network operations team when requests begin failing too consistently. ITCAM puts centralized software on a management console, allowing IT managers to configure ITCAM for alerting. Distributed software agents are on SOA components such as WebLogic, WebSphere, and Microsoft .NET middleware and applications servers. The agents gather performance metrics. Applications managers use a Web-enabled interface to do searches specific to lines of code, to tweak application performance, and to assist with problem diagnostics. An analyst points out that even if applications can be detached from system manage, all SOA management vendors will have to provide customers with event correlation to make intelligent use of data that is gathered at the SOA and underlying system levels.
