As Korea's borders for broadband and mobile networks fade, broadband connections are becoming mobile with Wi-Fi such offerings as KT Nespot. Soon to be available are WiBro nets from KT and Hanaro. Mobile phone technologies are also beginning to have broadband-like speeds as EV-DO is more widely available and as WCDMA services are more widely deployed. The Korean mobile and broadband nets are very advanced, but have come about separately and have very different overall configurations, network architectures, and business models. The Korean model therefore has been proactive in conceiving the merger of two telecommunication sectors and has renamed the new network as the broadband converged network (BCN). The BCN is being promoted as a single, huge IP network that will allow Koreans to connect from many types of terminals and from almost all locations. Each different network has to intercommunicate with all the others, and all networks have to be able transport data to and from each other. A third type of data service will have to be constructed and is described as the portable Internet (WiBro). WiBro has mobility at a level in between WLAN and IMT-2000 speed and technology. Connectivity would be at 1Mbp/second, and users would pay a flat fee monthly. Topics covered are three strategies of the three licensed operators, the DongDaeMun market as a good indicator of Korean communications network usage, the concept of the home information gateway in Korea, and the WiBro goals of the Korean government.
