Data pools are generally reliable ways to synchronize supply chain data but they do not resolve all problems. Pooled data creates a single publishing interface where suppliers post data about packaging and products, allowing customers to collect information about inbound materials. Although data pool architecture manages the bulk of inter-company communication for most trading partners, as much as 20% of customers will require specialized work. The beauty of data pools lies in their flexibility, since the pool to which a provider connects need not be the same one as used by customers. Global Registry is an entity operated by GS1, the new name for EAN International, and it enables connections. Once customers and suppliers are registered, data moves directly from source to recipient data pools. GS1's goals include globally valid standards and services for business communication, and will control certification assuring data pools will interact properly with the Global Registry. In turn, companies join the Global Data Synchronization Network, offering various data pool choices. The intent is to provide participants with a valuable service while sidestepping costs. Certified data pools have existed for some time. A short list includes: Click Commerce Data Pool 2.0 from Click Commerce Inc.; Global eXchange Services Inc.'s Data Pool Manager 5.0; SINFOS Data Pool Germany Food/Non Food 4.1 from SINFOS GmbH; and Transora Data Pool 5.0 from Transora. Data quality, still unregulated at times, needs scrubbing and sanity checking to be fully accessible.
